Brand Identity, Website Design & Ongoing Creative Direction
OVERLAP is a contemporary gallery and creative space in Newport, Rhode Island, focused on the intersection of art, craft, and design. I developed the original brand identity, website, environmental graphics, and ongoing promotional materials.
Initially, one of the primary challenges of the project was that the gallery did not yet physically exist when the website was being designed. The building was still under construction, exhibitions had not yet been finalized, and there was little visual material available to introduce the space to the public.
To create interest and establish a strong identity before opening, I collaborated with Stitzlein Studio to develop an animated logo experience for the homepage. The animation introduced the gallery in a playful and unexpected way while helping establish a contemporary visual presence before photography and exhibition documentation were available.
As the gallery evolved, the identity system was intentionally designed to remain flexible across applications and over time. Variations in color, transparency, and outline treatments allowed the brand to adapt alongside changing exhibitions, artists, and programming while maintaining a consistent visual language.
Beyond the digital experience, I designed the gallery’s exterior signage in collaboration with Moritz Wood+Metal. Conceived as a floating sculptural element attached to the building, the sign was designed with equal attention to form, shadow, color, and architectural presence. The front-facing yellow surface adds warmth to the exterior, while the pink-painted reverse subtly reflects color onto the surrounding metal siding.
