The Lake and The Ocean

Lake Erie sunset

I lived near the Atlantic Ocean for 24 years, first in New York City and then in Providence, RI. I loved the ocean, its smell of salt mixed in with sand and sunshine and storms with a dash of seaweed, its unpredictability, its soothing openness.

When I moved to Cleveland, I asked to get to know Lake Erie in the way that I knew the Atlantic Ocean. And I met a man who lives right on The Lake. Our summers were seeped in spending time gazing and being on this freshwater vastness, experiencing the variety of moods and sunsets. The relationship with the man ended, but my relationship with Lake Erie continues through my work. I am grateful to him for this gift.

The Lake and The Ocean merge in unpredictable waves on my plate sets.
